Registration for the 2011 OBFS Annual Meeting is now open!

The Bodega Marine Laboratory and Reserve will be your host for the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Organization of Biological Field Stations, Sept. 22-25.  The theme for this year's meeting is "Facilitating field research and education in changing landscapes". 

Arrival and check in for field trip participants and board of directors will be held on Wednesday, September 21st, from noon to 5 pm, followed by a reception, dinner, and the Board of Directors meeting (during dinner, open to all).

Arrival and check in for all other participants will be held on Thursday, September 22nd, from 1-6pm.

Engineering Field Deployment Manager - NEON

Overview

The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) is a $430 million dollar observatory project dedicated to understanding how changes in climate, land use and invasive species impact ecology.  For the next three decades NEON will collect a comprehensive range of ecological data on a continental scale across 20 eco-climatic domains representing US ecosystems.  NEON will use cutting edge technology including an airborne observation platform that will capture images of regional landscapes and vegetation; mobile, relocatable, and fixed data collection sites with automated ground sensors to monitor soil and atmosphere; and trained field crews who will observe and sample populations of diverse organisms and collect soil and water data.  A leading edge cyberinfrastructure will calibrate, store and publish this information.  The Observatory will grow to 300+ personnel and will be the first of its kind designed to detect and enable forecasting of ecological change at continental scales.

 Term:

This position is a term position for approximately five years during the construction period of the Observatory Project.  

Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Engineering Field Deployment Manager is responsible for managing several Field Deployment Teams that coordinate the deployment, checkout, test and commissioning of all instrumentation at all of the domain locations in the NEON Observatory.  The Engineering Field Deployment Manager is also responsible for assuring all deployment related contracts, instruments and personnel are shovel ready to efficiently support domain operations.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Remotely and onsite, manage and coordinate the Field Deployment Team Leads and their personnel, who are responsible for deploying instrumentation at all of the NEON FIU and Aquatic domain locations
  • Manage budgets, schedules, resources and personnel for all deployment related activities
  • Develop and document field deployment plans for all necessary deployment activities, to ensure efficient deployment of equipment to domain locations
  • Select and oversee contractors and vendors assigned to provide equipment, repair and services; assure contractors maintain project schedules, contract terms and budgeted costs to determine materials planning and ordering
  • Oversee the development, control, maintenance and change process of all related documentation and databases
  • Oversee quality and product assurance pre and post deployment to the domain locations
  • Mentors and evaluates Field Deployment Team Leads and their personnel
  • Coordinates with other product teams and departments to assure work meets company requirements and standards of quality
  • test, troubleshoot and operate instrumentation, calibration equipment and test fixtures

Education:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree

Required Experience:

  • 8 years or more experience in  operations with an emphasis on field deployment
  • Strong understanding of equipment calibration and maintenance techniques
  • Experience working with ERP materials planning and management
  • Experience managing line operations, resource and personnel
  • Ability to select and manage vendors and suppliers of deployment equipment, materials and repair services
  • 5 or more years direct supervisory experience of 5-15 personnel

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience deploying instrumentation at remote field locations
  • Background in quality assurance, document control, and configuration management
  • Experience with mechanical, electrical, software, IT, requirement documentation
  • Experience working with electrical, mechanical, chemical, gas handling, network, RF communication and power systems
  • Experience working in a repair center or customer service center 
  • Experience with medium to low volume assembly manufacturing
  • Experience coordinating and managing outsourced product manufacturing

Skills and Abilities:

  • Highly organized with the ability to multitask.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate with and direct others.
  • Able to travel 25% of the time.

Physical Abilities:

 
  • Work environment involves slight physical risks requiring basic safety precautions
    • Able to lift at least 40 pounds. 
    • Able to work outdoors in all types of weather, environmental conditions and remote locations.
    • Able to climb tall towers and work at elevations.

An opportunity to assist in the management of a large University of California research unit located in the scenic eastern Mojave Desert.  Located at the hub of the Mojave, Great Basin and Sonoran Deserts, the 4,000 ha Sweeney Granite Mountains Desert Research Center (GMDRC) is one of the fastest growing field stations in the southwestern U.S. With more than 175 current academic research projects, the Center also supports a thriving teaching program.  Ranging from 3,700 to 6,800 ft in elevation, Center lands include sweeping bajadas that give way to spectacular granitic boulder topography leading up to sky-island peaks covered by pinyon pine woodland.  Facilities include the 2,500 sq ft Allanson Laboratory and researcher dormitories and the Norris Camp teaching cabin and campground.  All facilities are solar powered and incorporate other alternative technologies for self-sustaining life in this remote natural area.  Recent improvements include T-1 high-speed internet, a lecture hall/conference room and upgrades to staff.  The GMDRC supports multidisciplinary research ranging from organismal biology, plant and animal ecology and physiology, geology, archaeology and other environmental sciences.
 
*Responsibilities.  “Reserve Steward” title (which falls within the payroll title “senior building maintenance worker”) more accurately reflects the importance of the position.  The Reserve Steward is a key member of the GMDRC team and will work directly with the GMDRC Director, Administrative Director, and UCR Campus Director.  Primary responsibilities of the position are to maintain daily operations of facilities and grounds at the Center, including structures, vehicles, roads, utilities as well as systems and infrastructure related to research projects.  The steward will also assist with other daily operational aspects of the GMDRC, including occasional administration and user management, information systems, biological monitoring, meetings and events, research and educational programs, database management, museum collections, and public outreach activities.  Self-motivation, ingenuity, an interest in alternative technologies, and strong interpersonal skills are desired.  Applicants must feel comfortable living in a wilderness setting where amenities are sometimes lacking.  A minimum of two years construction experience and basic computer skills including word processing, use of spreadsheets and e-mail are required.  Salary based on experience and qualifications.  This career position comes with housing and most utilities at minimal cost, as well as the UC comprehensive compensation and benefits package. Job Summary

The Prescott College Kino Bay Center for Cultural and Ecological Studies seeks a Field Station Manager to oversee personnel and field station operations under the direction of the Station Co-directors.  The Field Station Manager lives on site in Kino Bay, Mexico and works closely with a staff of up to ten members of Mexican and American nationals to foster a positive, productive and safe atmosphere at the field station.  He/she provides on-the-ground logistical support for all station users and staff; oversees the maintenance and construction of all station facilities, and acts as the primary safety officer on-site, helping to keep all station activities both on-site and in the field safe and enjoyable.  The Field Station manager works year round and is on call 24/7, fluctuating between long hours at high use times and a more relaxed schedule in the interim periods.

Essential Responsibilities

  • The Field Station Manger is responsible for the overall operation of the field station.
    • Coordination of field station use by residents and visitor groups 
    • Coordination of all field activities conducted through the field station
    • Coordination and oversight of safety procedures at the field station
    • Oversight of all maintenance activities conducted by the Maintenance Workers
    • Oversight of equipment warehouse management
    • Correspondence with co-directors about equipment acquisition priorities
    • Oversight of  all boat and vehicle use and maintenance
    • Logistical support for all research, resource management and community outreach activities conducted through the field station
    • Oversight of office and fiscal management conducted by the Administrative Coordinator
    • Oversight of construction and maintenance activities

Education and Experience

  • Conversational fluency in Spanish and English
  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills
  • Experience overseeing construction and maintenance activities
  • Ability to troubleshoot and fix general plumbing, electrical and facilities problems
  • Personnel management and leadership experience
  • Field safety management and first responder experience (WFR certification)

Job Description:
The UVU Capitol Reef Field Station Site Manager will reside at the field station during periods of station visitation and on a regular basis to maintain safety and manage daily operations of the site. The site manager is the first contact for guests visiting the station and will be responsible for providing an orientation and facilitating activities. The field station is located within Capitol Reef National Park and functions as an education and research center under the direction of Utah Valley University (UVU) in partnership with Capitol Reef National Park (CRNP). The Site Manager will report directly to the UVU Capitol Reef Station Director.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

-Site Manager will supervise and/or coordinate any volunteer activities or work study students involved in field station activities.
-Site Manager will supervise up to three UVU student interns per season.
-Site manager has responsibility for maintaining the facility and during minor upkeep and repair.

Qualifications:
Education: Minimum BS degree from an accredited institution in Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Ecology, or related areas with at least 1 year of documented experience in field work or interpretive employment.
