Course Description: Examine the taxonomy and ecology of freshwater algae in the Great Lakes region. The course will take a systems-level approach towards describing and identifying characteristic algal assemblages that inhabit ecosystems in and around the Beaver Island Archipelago. Students will conduct habitat assessments for freshwater ecosystems using algae as a proxy for ecosystem health (productivity, food web structure, occurrence of harmful and nuisance species). Credit/Non-credit option
