Data Management Interns (PO-00735856)

Selected students will work with National Park Service staff to evaluate and convert baseline biological inventory data into open and reusable data packages for the NPS Inventory & Monitoring Division. The primary duties will be to:

  • Interns will work to convert products in older data formats to current formats, including a wide variety of datasets from species (e.g. mammals, plants, birds, fish, herps) and vegetation mapping inventory studies.
  • Assist the National Park Service in demonstrating a commitment to Open Data and Open Science principles.
  • Assist with the quality control of species observation data extracted from reports, published data sets, and external data sources.
  • Assist with the development and testing of tools to automate the processing, evaluation, publication, and visualization of species observation data throughout the NPS system.
  • Assist in writing data release reports to describe data processing and to inform future users of the data.
  • Assist in curating content on the NPS DataStore website, which will improve usability and access for everyone.

The intern will work as part of the data science team in the Inventory & Monitoring Division central program office in Fort Collins, CO. Any applicant needs to have knowledge of the Windows environment and have an awareness of R and RStudio or related coding platforms. Additional training on R coding and NPS tools (e.g. NPSdataverse) will be provided as part of the internship.

This position will require most hours sitting (or standing, if preferred) at a computer. Intern will have a few hours a week to receive training on a data/GIS/GPS skill of their choosing. There is no travel or field work involved in this position.

Compensation amounts:
– $650 – one time RT travel allowance
– $600 – weekly living allowance
– $1200 – monthly housing allowance, booked and leased by SCA (12 months of housing)
– Optional monthly health coverage

– AmeriCorps eligible ($6895 education award)

Training Provided: The member will have access to the LinkedIn Learning library of classes that can advance their career as well as NPS-specific training related to the use of R and GIS in support of resource management.
