UMBS is a living-learning community that, for over 100 years, has explored how the natural world works through research and education. Through our academic programing design, facilitation, and orientation activities, we intentionally work to build community, reduce barriers, and create a more inclusive and diverse scientific community.

This position will be based in Ann Arbor during academic year and at the UMBS campus in Pellston, Michigan June through August (via multiple stays or a continuous residency). The UMBS community welcomes families, and staff and researchers bring along their partners and children for the summer. Family housing accommodations are available at the Pellston campus during the summer sessions and off-season visits, and we have a fully functioning dining hall during spring and summer sessions.

You will report to the Biological Station Director and Associate Director. 

Academic Program Management & Leadership 50%

  • Create and lead year-round academic programs in collaboration with UMBS Director, Associate Director, campus partners and instructional faculty
  • Collaborate with other UM units and the northern MI community to build new academic and research programming for undergraduate students at UMBS through grant proposal writing, fundraising, and developing new partnerships.
  • Organize onboarding and orientation programming for instructional faculty and teaching assistants and graduate student instructors
  • With support from UM programs, help design and implement diversity, equity, and inclusion practices in student programming
  • Oversee educational programmatic assessment and evaluation and participate in educational research development

Program Administration & Student Support 50%

  • Manage all UMBS course offerings in coordination with academic units and the registrar’s office
  • Co-manage student recruitment with the UMBS Communications Specialist
  • Advise students regarding course offerings and program experiences
  • Manage and administer student financial aid process for scholarships and fellowships
  • Manage admission, application, and registration processes
  • Create and lead orientation programming for students
  • Organize student resident life program in coordination with a resident staff team during the summer sessions

Required Qualifications

  • An advanced degree (e.g., Ph.D., J.D.) or a Master’s degree and 5 or more years of related experience in academic program support or management
  • Demonstrated ability to manage programs related to academic instruction or training and collaborate with multiple partners, including faculty and students
  • Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with proposal writing and collaboration to create new opportunities for our students and educational program
  • Ability to analyze assessment data and practices and implement ways to improve the student experience
