Description
Manages, supports and directs operations at the Baja field station located in Bahia de los Angeles, Baja California, Mexico. Provides logistical assistance and country-specific cultural support to academic program directors, faculty, students, and site-users from other institutions.
Supervision
Supervision is provided by the Vice President, Instructional Services.
Does not directly or indirectly supervise other District employees; may oversee contractors.
Examples of Duties
• Manages field station operations and ensures operations are consistent with the local, state and national laws of Mexico, as well as District policies and procedures.
• Manages, supports and directs facilities operations, including oversight of contractors.
• Supports program logistics and facility use.
• Represents District interests with the Mexican authorities; fosters and promotes effective, professional relationships with the local community and civil authorities; and serves as the executive director of the Asociacion Civil (the field station's governing body), including filing yearly tax payments of the Asociacion Civil to Mexican authorities.
• Prepares and submits environmental reports required by local, state, and federal laws or regulations and Mexican authorities.
• Responds to emergencies involving the facilities; coordinates and oversees contractors and follows up to ensure problems have been resolved.
• Establishes and implements safety and security measures and protocols for faculty, students and site-users from other institutions.
• Oversees and ensures the maintenance and repair of equipment and keeps an updated inventory of supplies and equipment.
• Oversees the planning, development, and administration of budgets, contracts, and grants as approved by appropriate District officials; prepares and submits expense reports in a timely manner in accordance with District policies and procedures.
• Identifies and seeks funding sources in support of operations, and seeks new users of the field station.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Two (2) years of supervisory experience either in facilities management or coordination of field station activities.
Bi-lingual (English/Spanish)
Preferred Qualifications
Field station experience in a higher education setting.
Licenses/Certifications/Other Requirements:
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Must possess a U.S. Coast Guard boating certificate and/or a State of California Boating Card (may obtain after appointment).
Must possess Red Cross First-Aid and CPR certificates (may obtain after appointment).
Knowledge of:
• Facilities management principles and practices including: facilities and equipment operations; preventive maintenance and repairs; and project and contract management.
• Principles and practices of business administration including: planning, budgeting, purchasing, and public relations.
• Grant development and administration.
• Office practices and procedures, including the use of personal computers and standard business software.
• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
• Basic principles and practices of customer service.
• Correct use of the English and Spanish language, including spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Ability to:
• Identify and troubleshoot common facilities and operational problems.
• Analyze, interpret and apply state, federal and Mexican laws, policies and procedures associated with facility operation and management.
• Cultivate relationships with local, state and federal Mexican authorities and non-governmental organizations.
• Work cooperatively in a multicultural educational environment.
• Write and obtain grants and external resources.
• Operate a variety of office equipment including computers, printers, multi-line telephones, fax machines, copy machines and calculators, and utilize standard. business word processing, spreadsheet, email, presentation, and database software.
• Prepare reports, correspondence and other documents using standard business formats.
• Explain practices, policies and procedures for area(s) of assignment.
• Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information.
• Prioritize work and complete assignments within established deadlines.
• Provide and obtain detailed information as needed.
• Exercise reasonable judgment in performing job duties.
• Work and perform duties independently.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing in English and Spanish.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS:
The following physical and mental standards are identified as necessary to perform the
essential duties and responsibilities. However, reasonable accommodation may be made to

Mobility: frequent sitting for long periods; frequent kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling,
walking and standing; occasional reaching above and below desk level.

grasping to handle individual papers, write and take notes; and feel individual objects.
Lifting: frequent lifting of papers, files, equipment and material weighing up to 10 pounds;
occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
Visual Requirements: frequent use of vision sufficient to read files, documents, and
computer screens and do close-up work.
Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and speaking in person and on the telephone.
Emotional/Psychological Factors: frequent contact with others including extensive public
contact; frequent deadlines and time-limited assignments.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Work typically occurs in both indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to varied
weather conditions. Work requires the inspection and operation of potentially hazardous
machinery, facilities, and equipment.
Additional Information
SalaryStarting salary is from $8,133 to $10,379 per month depending upon education and experience.
