Assistant Director of Blue Oak Ranch Reserve

Founded in 2007,  Blue Oak Ranch Reserve is a 3,280 acre Biological Field Station and Ecological Reserve, one of the 39 units of the UC Natural Reserve System, and is operated jointly by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, Berkeley Natural History Museums and the NRS. The Reserve provides a wealth of research and teaching opportunities in a wide range of important Californian habitats.
The shared mission of the 39 Reserves in the Natural Reserve System is to contribute to the understanding and wise stewardship of the Earth and its natural systems by supporting university-level teaching, research, and public service at protected natural areas throughout California.

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Reserve Director, uses advanced concepts in environmental research and facilities management to effectively assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of operational policies for a field station(s). Requires expertise related to field station responsibility, such as wildlife biology, forestry, agriculture, ecosystem research, etc. Regularly works on highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Duties include, but are not limited to

•Collaborates with Faculty Director and Reserve Director in leadership of the Reserve to provide support for researchers, university classes and public outreach programs. Responsible for co-directing all aspects of the daily operations.
•Schedules instructional and research activities, assists with research project approvals.
•Assists with budget planning and oversight, purchasing, and annual reporting.
•Responsible for informatics projects including website, sensor databases, weather data, data archives, and social media, and operation of all IT and wireless systems.
•Supervises Reserve Senior Building Maintenance Worker, provides oversight on all facilities, off-grid utility systems, scheduled and preventive maintenance, and equipment.
•Responsible for planning and implementation of strategies for stewardship of natural resources, control of invasive species, and related needs

Required Qualifications
•Knowledge of safety and regulatory requirements relative to field station responsibility.
•Expertise in ecology, ecological restoration, stewardship of aquatic and terrestrial habitats, eradication and control of non-native invasive species.
•Ability to communicate broad ecological and environmental knowledge to researchers, students, governmental workers, etc. 
•Ability to interpret the processes and procedures of local and government agencies.
•Experience with general maintenance of facilities involving well water systems, solar photovoltaic power, AC electrical, tool upkeep, general electronics operation.
•Experience with computer operation of Macintosh and Windows OS, use of Global Positioning Systems.
•Must possess basic skills in use of software including Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, Internet research, accessing campus web-based resources and email. 
•Proven wireless networking and IT experience or ability to learn.
•Excellent problem solving skills.
•Experience in project management.
•Outstanding communication skills.
•Excellent organizational skills.
•Demonstrated experience with administration and budget management, staff supervision, facilities and equipment operations and maintenance, land stewardship and resource monitoring.
•The Assistant Director is required to reside at the Reserve when on duty, except for brief intervals on BORR business, or on authorized days off and vacation periods. Housing is provided. This includes being on call outside of normal business hours. 

Education/Training:
•BS or equivalent work experience

Preferred Qualifications
•Experience with operations at a remote field station.
•Advanced degree in an environmental science or similar field. 
•Demonstrated track record of leading successful grant proposals.
•Experience in information technology and wireless networking.

Salary & Benefits
Annual Salary: $53,800.00 - $81,900.00
