Sam Houston State University seeks a field station facility manager. The qualified candidate will be responsible for land and facility management of the Center for Biological Field Studies (CBFS), a 247-acre biological field station located in Huntsville, Texas.

A bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, agriculture, forestry or land management is required with a Masters preferred.  The facility manager will be responsible for implementing conservation land management strategies including but not limited to managing endangered species habitat, controlling invasive species, coordinating controlled burns with local fish and wildlife officials, and assisting faculty and students in research.  In addition, the facility manager will be responsible for logistical oversight, monitoring access to the grounds, maintenance and inventory, controlling vegetative growth along vehicle and hiking trails using a variety of tools (tractor, lawn mower, chain saw), providing supervision of facility improvement and ensuring safety within the CFBS.

The facility manager must have a valid driver’s license and will be expected to pass the Structural Pest Control Board licensing exam within the first 6 months of being hired.  The facility manager will report to the CFBS committee which is comprised of research faculty and chaired by the Director of the CFBS.  The facility manager will work year-round, fluctuating between long hours at high use times and a more relaxed schedule in the interim periods.  As a result, there are no set working hours; however, the Department of Labor, Title 29, Part 785.23, Code of Federal Regulations, allows the exact hours worked under these circumstances to be determined by a reasonable agreement considering all of the pertinent facts.  Therefore, as a condition of employment the incumbent agrees the average number of hours worked each week will be equal to the full‑time equivalency appointment.

The University offers a competitive salary ($2394- $4302 per month) with a standard benefits package including insurance and retirement benefits. In addition, the field station manager will be allowed to live rent free in a 2/1 (~1200sqft) Ranch Style home located within the CBFS.  Sam Houston State University is a R-2 institution with an enrollment of 18,400 students and located in a rural university town (population 35,000).  The CBFS is 11 miles from the University campus and Huntsville, and just 50 miles north of Houston.
