LTAR Assistant Data Manager

 Archbold Biological Station and its partner site University of Florida Range Cattle Research Center (UF RCREC) are part of the Long-term Agroecosystem Research Network (LTAR) http://ltar.nal.usda.gov), a network of 18 agroecosystems across the United States that seek to address the grand challenge of maintaining multiple ecosystem services in food production systems.  The Archbold-UF LTAR consists of three research sites dispersed across agricultural and conservation lands throughout south central Florida, totaling nearly 9,000 ha.

 The Archbold-UF LTAR is in search of a dedicated Assistant Data Manager to assist with organization and dissemination of data associated with their sites. Our ideal candidate is someone who loves databases and coding but has a background in (or interest in) agroecology and sustainable food production and understands its importance to society. We are looking for someone who doesn’t mind being on a computer all day working through data issues, and problem solving our data management needs. We need someone who is creative and driven, and will take initiative to help Archbold and LTAR best manage our data.  This person will be happy to assist staff at both sites with their data documentation and organization.

 

This is a one year full-time position that offers health and dental benefits, retirement plan with matching employer contributions after one year, paid vacation and sick leave, and 10 paid holidays per year.  The position may be extended each year with the possibility of future funding.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities_________________________________________________

  • Day to day responsibilities include data management coordination for two of the Archbold-UF LTAR sites, MAERC and RCREC (www.maerc.org; rcrec-ona.ifas.ufl.edu). This will include some travel between the two sites, which are approximately 60 miles apart.
  • Participate in LTAR network Data Management working group meetings and conference calls
  • Work alongside the Data Services team to assist researchers with data management tasks
  • Monitoring and trouble-shooting of data flow from streaming sensors to relational databases, and automated subset data transfers to offsite end users
  • Microsoft Access database creation and maintenance, including form design, to support ongoing research projects at both sites

 

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Computer Science or related field, with relevant coursework/equivalent work experience using relational databases preferred
  • Experience with Microsoft Access, Word and Excel is required
  • Experience with R, Microsoft SQL Server, VBA coding, MS Access form design and macro creation preferred
Ability to troubleshoot network data flow connections, database errors, VBA code

Director of Science and Research Job Description

 

Lacawac Sanctuary is a non-profit nature preserve, biological field station, and environmental education center located in the Pocono Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania.  Lacawac’s545-acre property includes a pristine 52-acre glacial lake and its watershed (a National Natural Landmark), two small ponds, bogs, frontage on the largest lake in eastern Pennsylvania, forests with hiking trails, and a Great Camp listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since its inception in 1966, the Lacawac Sanctuary’s mission has been to preserve Lake Lacawac, its watershed, the surrounding forest and historic structures; provide a venue for ecological research, scholarly interaction and the training of scientists; and offer public education on environmental and conservation issues. For nearly 50 years, Lacawac has accomplished this mission by offering a diverse set of natural areas, facilities, and programs for K-12 and post-secondary educators and students, area residents, scientific researchers, and visitors to the region.

 

The Director of Science and Research will provide strategic leadership for research and collegiate educational programs at Lacawac.  The Director of Science and Research’s primary responsibility will be to develop, promote and coordinate use of Lacawac's facilities by colleges and universities, various conferences and workshops (30%). In collaboration with other institutions of higher education, the Director of Science and Research will be active in research by conducting field sampling, maintaining instrumentation, supervising undergraduate interns, and interacting with students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty members (10%). The Director of Science and Research will engage in outreach programs such as PLEON (Pocono Lakes Ecological Observatory Network), other citizen science programs in lake monitoring and sustainable management practices and K-12 outreach programming (20%).  Finally, the Director of Science and Research will develop and externally funded research program that support  collaboration and the continued growth of research and collegiate educational programs at Lacawac(40%).

 

General duties of the DSR included but are not limited to:

  • Promote usage of the field station among colleges and universities.
  • Conduct research, maintain instrumentation, supervise interns and assist graduate and undergraduate researchers. 
  • Develop an active, externally funded research program involving faculty and students from multiple institutions of higher education.
  • Coordinate and facilitate outreach involving workshops, fellowships, and research collaborations.
  • Attend annual meetings when possible of the Organization of Biological Field Stations (http://www.obfs.org/), of whichLacawac is a member.
  • Act as a liaison and remain accessible and connected with the Global Lake Ecological ObservatoryNetwork (GLEON), National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) as well as the Upper Delaware RiverAdvisory Council, the Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Council, and other more regional as well asnational and international organizations and institutions with common research and educational goals inaquatic and watershed sciences.
  • Contact regional, and where appropriate, national foundations and funding agencies and work withother members of the Lacawac Community to write proposals to attract funding to establish afellowship fund, or ideally an endowment, that can be used to attract faculty and students to Lacawacby funding their research expenses and residential and use fees at Lacawac.
  • Hold special events such as open houses, seminars, and lectures that will be designed to expose thecommunity to the important work being done at Lacawac.
  • Interact with Consortium members (Miami University and Drexel University and other active members of the Global Lake Ecological Observatory network (GLEON) with the goal of developing Lacawac as a “Hub for EONs”.  One key component of this will be to provide leadership for the Pocono Lake Ecological Observatory Network (PLEON), a regional lake monitoringand water quality education program. Through PLEON, the DSR will engage regional lake association members in educational initiatives designed to provide a better understanding of limnological processes and link to other regional, state, national and global EONs.
  • Provide support to K-12 outreach programs as needed, including an Advanced Water Ecology course.
  • Work cooperatively with the Environmental Education Manager to provide K-12 education programs in order to enhance the programs as necessary (ie. Advanced Water Ecology)

 

Salary Range: $40,000- $45,000. Benefits include medical, dental, vision insurance and housing.  Director’s house is a 2 bedroom, loft chalet home equipped with appliances including washer, dryer, stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher (Value $9,600).

Preserve and Research Station Manager, Palmyra Program

Summary: The Preserve and Research Station Manager will be based in The Nature Conservancy’s Honolulu office, and is responsible for ensuring that all operations at the research station and in the preserve, are conducted in a safe and efficient manner, and in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. The Preserve and Research Station Manager is responsible for oversight and management of all the Conservancy's station facilities and equipment at Palmyra, including buildings, research facilities, aircraft runway, renewable energy system, food storage and preparation facilities, fuel farm and lodging facilities. The Preserve and Research Station Manager rotates between Honolulu and Palmyra with three to four months in Honolulu and three to four months at Palmyra.  When at Palmyra, this position oversees TNC’s research station and preserve facilities in addition to supervising TNC research station staff and volunteers.

 

The successful applicant will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in facilities or operations management, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience interacting with scientists and knowledge of scientific principles and research methods, or work experience in natural resource management.
  • Demonstrated ability to remotely manage staff in an inclusive and empowering manner that ensures safe and efficient operations of facilities and equipment.
  • Demonstrated interest in sustainability engineering, or providing innovative solutions to complex problems
  • Experience effectively managing multiple complex projects under high-stress situations.
  • Experience managing complicated budgets, workloads, transportation, and logistics.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to keep track of calendars, financial data, and other information. 
  • Experience communicating directions or tasks and collaborating with a team of professionals to ensure that goals are met and projects accomplished on time and on budget.

Field Station Director - Missouri University of Science and Technology

Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) invites applications for the tenure-line position of Field Station Director within the Department of Biological Sciences to begin Fall Semester, 2018.  This search is taking place during an exciting time of rapid growth for the department, and the successful candidate will play a major role in further growth of the program in accordance with Missouri S&T’s Strategic Plan (http://strategicplan.mst.edu/). Candidates must have a Ph.D., a strong publication record, and an active, externally funded research program in an area related to field biology. Appointment of the position can be at associate or full professor, depending on experience.

This founding field station director will take the lead in the development of a newly established field station, located 30 minutes from campus. The program has recently been awarded an NSF planning grant, and is an OBFS institutional member.  There are several habitats in the area around the field station, including aquatic systems (ponds, wetlands, and streams), terrestrial systems (forests, old fields, glades), and more unique systems (karst areas and caves). Candidates can be active researchers on animals, plants, or microbes, and examine their study organisms at a variety of scales, from population genetics to ecosystem ecology. In addition to being director of the field station, the candidate will teach classes both on campus and at the field station and advise graduate (M.S.) and undergraduate students in research. The director will also collaborate with researchers and instructors from other departments, including geology, chemistry, environmental engineering, social science, and humanities.

Missouri S&T, one of four campuses comprising the University of Missouri, enrolls approximately 6,800 undergraduates and 2,000 graduate students and is among the top technological research universities in the country.  Its 284-acre campus, about 90 minutes from the city of St. Louis, is situated amid the scenic Missouri Ozarks. For more than 40 years, Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) has supported year-round education and research on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. BMSC is owned and managed by a not-for-profit organization, the Western Canadian Universities Marine Sciences Society, whose members are University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, University of Calgary, Simon Fraser University and University of Victoria.

Reporting to the Director, the Deputy Director/Operations Manager is responsible for the day-to-day provision, operation and maintenance of the BMSC’s facilities, building systems and infrastructure.
