Research Associate Professor

Manager, North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

Applications are being accepted for a research associate professor position located at the

University of South Carolina Baruch Marine Field Laboratory in Georgetown, SC. This

individual will serve as the Manager of the North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research

Reserve (NI-WB NERR) that is headquartered at the Baruch Marine Field Laboratory. The NIWB

NERR is one in a network of 29 sites around the U.S. and its territories that make up the

National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS). Reserves conduct research, monitoring,

education and stewardship activities that improve our understanding and management of coastal

areas.

Position Description:

The Reserve Manager oversees and coordinates operations of the NI-WB NERR, a partnership

between the University of South Carolina and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Administration (NOAA). Management activities include regular communication with program

coordinators, approving and reviewing budget expenditures, advertising and filling position

vacancies as needed, and coordinating reserve activities and facility operations with USC Baruch

Institute staff in Columbia and at the coast, the Belle W. Baruch Foundation, and with other

partners on the Hobcaw Barony property. The Reserve Manager also coordinates with NOAA’s

Office for Coastal Management to ensure consistency with NOAA requirements and to further

site-based and system-wide priorities. Primary responsibilities include preparing and submitting

semi-annual reports, tracking and reporting on required performance measures, participating in

NERR System-wide (NERRS) meetings and workgroups, coordinating activities with other

reserves in the NERRS network, working with staff to update the reserve management plan

(every five years), and participating in NOAA program evaluations. The Manager also prepares

annual reserve operations proposals and budgets (in collaboration with the program coordinators)

that support management goals and objectives outlined in the reserve’s management plan.

Minimum qualifications:

Ph.D. in marine or environmental science, coastal resource management, or environmental

policy. Knowledge and experience in program development, implementation, evaluation and

management with an emphasis on coastal systems. Ability to communicate effectively with

different audiences including scientists, policy-makers, educators and members of the general

public. Experience implementing policy and managing grants and associated budgets. Strong

leadership skills with experience organizing and facilitating meetings for staff and other

audiences.

This position is a full-time, grant funded position with a starting date of July 1, 2018. Salary:

$57,156 - $64.855, depending on experience. Full benefits provided including annual and sick

leave, state retirement, and health insurance.

The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) Program is currently seeking a Field Operations Manager. This position is located in Hilo, HI and manages NEON operations at Pu'u Maka'ala Natural Area Reserve..

 Occasional travel outside the region will be required.

NEON is a continental-scale ecological observation facility sponsored by the National Science Foundation that gathers and synthesizes data on the impacts of climate change, land use change and invasive species on natural resources and biodiversity. The observatory is designed to collect high-quality, standardized data from field sites across the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This position manages a broad scope of scientific inquiry, managing a multi-disciplinary team of field scientists who collect measurements related to botany, invertebrates, soils, micrometeorology, and eddy flux at one NEON site in Domain 20 - Hawaii (Pacific Tropical).

 MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan, schedule, conduct and ensure accurate execution, within NEON scientific parameters and annual budget, of all maintenance, repair and field sampling activities for 1 NEON field site.
    • Coordination for instrument maintenance is required for approximately 40 different sensors, data acquisition system, power distribution system and supporting infrastructure (i.e. tower, instrument hut, boardwalks).
    • Coordination for field observations and collection are conducted using approximately 15 different protocols and multiple SOP’s with varying schedule requirements based on local ecosystem and current field conditions.
  • Recruit, train and manage all regular and temporary personnel supporting field office, lab and field site tasks.
  • Act as liaison between regional stakeholders, including educational and research organizations, local property owners and the general public and NEON Headquarters. 
  • Communicate NEON status and activities, local activities and partnerships, and regional issues and concerns to appropriate regional stakeholders and NEON staff. Work with regional stakeholders to resolve issues or concerns.
  • Plan and participate in local/regional community engagement activities (i.e. local/regional conferences or meetings, invited talks).
  • Ensure compliance with NEON safety policy and procedures.
  • Ensure appropriate equipment, materials and supplies are available to support required field activities. Ensure accuracy and efficient use of funds within assigned region.

  

THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:

  • Bachelors’ Degree in life science field.
  • 5 years previous experience supervising personnel including participating in hiring, training, and evaluating performance.
  • Previous experience developing and managing budgets and schedules.
  • Previous experience performing ecology related lab and field activities and/or maintaining scientific instrumentation (e.g. meteorological and aquatic sensors).
  • Previous experience communicating with external stakeholders such as customers, funding agencies, regulatory agencies, etc.
  • Requires critical human relation skills to understand, select, develop and motivate others.
  • Permanent U.S. Work Authorization required

 

THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:

  • Previous experience managing a technical field operations group.
  • Graduate study in biology, ecology, environmental science or related field.
  • Previous experience leading or participating in outdoor activities in remote areas.

Toolik Field Station Facility Supervisor

The Toolik Field Station (TFS) Facility Supervisor manages many aspects of on-site operations at Toolik Field Station including supervising up to 20 staff members and providing high-level service to a wide variety of users of the station.  This position splits time in residence on site at the station and at the administrative offices on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. 

The Toolik Field Station, a unit of the Institute of Arctic Biology, University of Alaska Fairbanks is a world-renowned Arctic field station located 360 road miles north of Fairbanks, Alaska on the rural Dalton Highway. The remote station supports researchers, students, and others from around the world. The population of the station can vary from 3 to 150 residents throughout the year (over 400 different individuals annually) and is open 365 days a year.

The ideal candidate has experience in remote operations, leadership, supervising multiple staff, and professional and high-level customer service.

 2018 SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM IN ECOLOGY

ASSISTANT PROGRAM COORDINATOR/RESIDENT ADVISOR

(13-week position available beginning May 14, 2018)

 

For thirteen weeks in May-August 2018, twenty college-age students will join dozens of visiting and staff scientists at Harvard Forest in researching the effects of natural and human disturbances on forest ecosystems.  The Program Assistant works closely with the Summer Program Coordinator in organizing the various educational components to the summer program.  S/he provides information, advising, support and discipline required to create a hospitable academic work environment.

             

Duties and Responsibilities (work under the supervision of the Summer Program Coordinator)

Assistant Program Coordinator

Assist with student arrival and orientation (May 20th – 22nd)

Inform students of Harvard Forest activities, policies, and expectations

Coordinate weekly evening workshops and seminars

Work with Summer Program Coordinator to resolve student issues

Organize Summer Student Symposium in early-August

Work on various tasks as needed to facilitate summer research program               

 
Resident Advisor
Responsible for day-to-day activities related to the successful operation of a student residence

Hold weekly house meetings

Plan, organize, and direct student committees (recycling, social activities, etc.)
Serve as advisor to student on matters concerning community development, conflict resolution and counseling
 

Required Skills, Training and Experience

Excellent listening, negotiation, organizational, and problem solving skills

Strong communication (verbal and written) and computer skills, comfortable using email and list-serves

Capable of performing a variety of tasks simultaneously

Work independently with moderate supervision

Previous experience working with ethnically and culturally diverse population preferred

Must have completed undergraduate degree as of Spring 2018

 

Time Commitment and Compensation

Compensation is $14.25/hour for 40 hours per week for 13 weeks (May 14 to August 10, 2018).  The assistant has a private room (room and board provided), shared office space with computer and access to Harvard Forest vehicles. The position requires on site residence with weeknight and weekend work. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Shoals Scientist-in-Residence Fellowship

Shoals Scientist-in-Residence Fellowships Accepting Applications! Shoals Scientist-in-Residence Fellowships (SIRF) support early career and postdoctoral scientists for up to three-month residencies at Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) on Appledore Island, Maine. This program provides financial support for residential research time that can be used for data analysis, manuscript preparation, experimentation, and collaboration, among others. Priority will be given to fellows engaged in SML-based science. Financial support includes: travel allowance, room and board, an honorarium, and research allowance. Fellows will be given lab/office space. Opportunities exist for fellows to have undergraduates work directly on their own research projects (advanced planning is required and is subject to the availability of funding). The aim of this program is to provide robust training for undergraduate marine science students while simultaneously enhancing the research breadth at SML. The program also seeks to increase the number of scientists from underrepresented groups; however, all qualified scientists are encouraged to apply.

 

Fellows are asked to give at least one seminar talk to the island community during their fellowship. Fellows are expected to spend 10 hrs/week mentoring 8-12 undergraduate students in SML’s Research Internship Program. Fellows will serve as the secondary mentors, complementing the guidance of each student's primary research mentor (aka the Principle Investigators). Fellows will attend weekly internship meetings where they may be called on to provide a lecture or expertise on field research methodology or some other aspect of independent research training. Lecture time will count towards the 10 hr/week commitment. Opportunities exist for public outreach and additional income via SML’s Adult & Family Programs in August and September.
