The McLaughlin Reserve is a research station, used for University-level research and teaching, and supporting overnight and working facilities located on approximately 7000 acres of land in a rural/wild part of northern California.  We are seeking an individual skilled in manual work, interested in working and living in a rural area, and generally knowledgeable about natural history and ecology.

Job entails primarily facilities, equipment, and infrastructure maintenance, with seasonal land management work.  Facilities include standard stick-built and industrial buildings, equipment includes cars, trucks, tractors, and 2-cycle engine tools, and infrastructure includes roads and fences.

Position title Research Coordinator SSSC Status Regular, Fulltime, Overtime Exempt Supervised by Research Director Compensation $40,000 Salaried, Holiday and Leave as outlined in SSSC Employee Handbook Place of Work 834 Lincoln St., Sitka Alaska Summary: This position supports the Research Director at the SSSC including grants administration, research logistics, technical support with field projects and directs the Scientist in Residency Fellowship. The successful candidate will have experience with grants administration, strong communication skills, be organized, enjoy working with people and have a can-do attitude, willing to pitch in where needed. Experience with grants administration and field science is desirable. Research Coordinator: Grants Administration for Research Grants is central to the position. Working under the supervision of the Research Director and in collaboration with the Finance Director, the Research Coordinator will contribute to grant writing, ensure grants are submitted complete and properly formatted, and reporting requirements are met on time. This position acts as the host to visiting scientists, working with the Operations Manager to ensure schedule and space issues are met. They act as the field technician for the Research Director as well as lend help when needed to visiting scientists. The Research Coordinator is the “front lines” of research at a busy field station keeping the Research Director informed regularly of networking and internal issues. Additionally, this position directs the Scientist in Residency Fellowship (SIRF), a high-profile fellowship funded by the National Science Foundation. The SIRF fellowship is a 1 month mini-sabbatical for midcareer US scientists. The scientists spend one week on outreach to the community which can be in a wide variety of activities and then they have 3 weeks do their own work or relax. The Research Coordinator is responsible for recruiting scientists, leading the panel to evaluate and choose Fellows, and scheduling of Fellowships. The Research Coordinator works with SSSC Education Director to place Fellows in Sitka schools and community events, to best leverage their research interests and abilities. The position also serves as the local host for the Fellow, making sure they are engaged in community activities and social events. Earthwatch is currently seeking proposals from scientists for field-based research that actively engages citizen scientists (recruited by Earthwatch) in projects that address key conservation and sustainability issues in the following areas:

Raystown Field Station Residence Director

Juniata College, a nationally ranked liberal arts college located in the scenic mountains of central Pennsylvania, invites applications for the position of Raystown Field Station (RFS) Residence Director. The successful candidate for this position will have dual responsibilities both as a Residence Director for the college remote field station with 14 resident students and with the Raystown Field Station as an academic program assistant to support undergraduate courses and labs taught as part of the station residential semester. The Director of the Field Station and Director of Residential Life supervises this position. This position is live-in; evening and weekend hours are expected. This position is full-time with a 12-month employment term.

The Specific Responsibilities of the RFS Program Assistant include:
• Develop, implement and assess the learning community residential programs at RFS
• Assist the facilities supervisor in general station operations and visitor support.
• Assist the RFS teaching faculty in classroom and laboratory exercises and provide field support logistics.
• Assist in the implementation of field research projects.
• Assist the Enrollment Office with scheduling new student tours.
• Oversee vehicle management and scheduling.
• Manage Social Media accounts for RFS. 
• Maintain kayaks sign out and usage schedule.

The Specific Responsibilities of the Resident Director (RD) include:
• Communicate, monitor, and enforce the policies and procedures that affect the residence hall operation
• Address residents’ needs and help to mediate roommate conflicts
• Coordinate the opening and closing procedures for the residence halls at the beginning and end of each semester and for holiday periods. 
• Report damages, repair needs, and replacement needs to the Field Station Office. 
• Develop and implement strategies that mirror the Residential Compass for students residing at the station. 
• Attend and monitor RFS campus functions, as needed.
• Intentionally engage with outdoor student organizations and coordinate activities at the field station.
• Utilize student development theories to assist with assessing student needs, setting goals, developing and evaluating programs. 
• When necessary, make referrals for students facing academic, personal, or other concerns. 
• Participate in the overall administration of the Office of Residential Life by serving on committees and tasks forces, representing the office as requested, and cooperatively assisting colleagues. 
• Maintain a positive and supportive working relationship with all members of the Residential Life staff
• Attend one-on-one meeting with Director of Residential Life on a bi-weekly basis or as needed. 
• Assist the Dean of Students Office with judicial proceedings for residents who have allegedly violated a Juniata College policy. 
• Assume on-duty responsibilities for residents and visitors at the station. 
• Perform other duties that may be assigned by the Director of Residential Life. 

Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree is required. Previous professional or paraprofessional experience in campus activities and/or residential life is preferred.
Applicants with previous experience with environmental field science and / or outdoor education are also preferred.
