Under general direction, oversees, supports and directs facilities and equipment maintenance operations and serves as intercultural liaison at the Glendale Community College (GCC) field station in Mexico (Estación del Mar Cortés, Bahía de los Ángeles, Baja California), located within a biological protected area at a site owned by a Mexican Asociación Civil (non-profit organization), a subsidiary of the Glendale Community College District; provides logistical assistance and cultural support to GCC Baja Academic Program Directors, faculty and students, and users from other institutions regarding instructional programming at the site; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Baker University Wetlands in Lawrence, KS is seeking a Biologist and Natural Areas Manager. The Biologist and Natural Areas Manager is responsible for developing and implementing a plan for managing wildlife habitats at the Baker University Wetlands. The plan should be based in scientific principles and include the process of managing the Wetlands in such a way that promotes wetland, prairie, and riparian habitats in the appropriate locations as well as maintains or enhances biodiversity while at the same time reducing or eradicating invasive species. In addition, he/she will be responsible for maintaining a functional wetland on a substantial portion of the property as an on-going contractual obligation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. To this end, he/she will ensure water control structures are functional as well as record quarterly water levels on areas that have active water appropriation permits. The Natural Areas Manager will assist in the on-going research efforts at the Wetlands. This includes assisting the Director in solicitation of visiting scientists as well as in grant writing to support research efforts including the purchase of specialized equipment as needed. He/she will also supervise interns as well as perform administrative duties that support management of and research at the Wetlands. The Natural History Biologist reports to the Director of the Baker Wetlands.

 Applicants should have a Master’s degree in biology or related field as well as a strong background (i.e., knowledge and experience) in habitat management, especially wetland, prairie, and riparian habitats. They should be capable of operation and maintenance of various pieces of equipment/power tools, possess skills to interact with a wide variety of audiences, be detail-oriented with good record keeping skills (particularly in reference to permits), and have the ability to set goals for the wetland facility and manage the budget needed for operation. The successful candidate will have a strong background in the natural sciences and experience in teaching for diversity, equity, and inclusion in outdoor settings, providing programs for a variety of age-groups from K-12 to adult audiences. In addition to teaching, the candidate should have experience supervising staff and/or interns and managing programs ranging from day trips to summer camps. Experience in environmental and/or educational research is preferable but not required. The candidate will serve as primary liaison between Black Rock Forest and the institutional members of the Black Rock Forest Consortium and will work closely with research and conservation staff to bring state of the art programming to the varied constituent audiences of Black Rock Forest. The candidate should be creative, dynamic, innovative, self-motivated, and willing to work with a variety of audiences including teachers, researchers and conservationists to develop and implement relevant programming in the 3,914 acre forest.

Qualifications and Experience of the Successful Candidate 

● Bachelor’s and advanced degrees, preferably including environmental or related sciences and/or STEM/STEAM education 

● Significant experience in formal or informal K-12 educational settings teaching disciplines that relate to forest ecology 

● Experience with and affinity for delivering place-based outdoor learning experiences (e.g. NOLS, Outward Bound type experiences), as well as informal science and sustainability lessons. 

● Demonstrated cultural competence and experience with promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and organizations 

● Experience teaching a broad age-range of students (some subset of K -12, college level students, teachers and other adult audiences) 

● Experience designing curriculum, with a view to adapting for different age-groups and diverse populations of youth, including youth of color, immigrants and underserved youth. 

● Experience and knowledge of curriculum development in experiential and transdisciplinary education (e.g. STEM and STEAM) 

● Experience in the use of technologies for teaching and learning 

● Experience with citizen science investigations 

● Excellent communication skills for a wide range of age-levels (writing, oral, and digital) 

● Experience with creating hands-on inquiry-based learning activities

The University of California Riverside Natural Reserve System (UCR NRS) administers 6 of 39 reserves within the University of California Natural Reserve System (NRS). In addition there are three satellite reserves under UCR's purview. As a Campus Administrative Director for the Natural Reserves, the incumbent will work on-campus to provide essential administrative & logistical support to site staff & their operations. The incumbent will be responsible for supporting and facilitating programmatic activities for UCR NRS with joint responsibility for most administrative, budgetary and development activities. Working within an administrative unit and reporting to UCR's Campus Faculty Director the incumbent works to support personnel of the UCR NRS in a variety of ways to include grant writing to bolster research, teaching and outreach, fund raising to increase NRS philanthropy and donorship, strategic planning in support of consensus related to long-range goals for UCR NRS and implementing programmatic initiatives, both directly and in a supporting role, to increase visibility of UCR NRS sites. A key component of this role is responsibility for administrative oversight to the UCR NRS Advisory Committee. In addition to working closely with committee members & Faculty Director, the incumbent also interacts with a broad audience of stakeholders to include UC NRS Systemwide office, all staff of the UCR NRS, the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS) Dean, the Financial & Administrative Officer within the administrative unit and campus affiliates providing services to UCR NRS.
