The GCE LTER program seeks a research technician to assist with studies of coastal ecology. Work will involve studies of water quality, soils, and wetland plants and animals. This Research Technician II position is based at the UGA Marine Institute on Sapelo Island, GA. The selected individual will work with other technicians, faculty and students at the field site.

The minimum qualification for the position is an Associate’s degree and some relevant experience; however, candidates with 4-year degrees in an environmental field (Biology, Chemistry, Geology) and significant experience will be the most competitive. Candidates must be able to operate pickup trucks, and have basic computer skills, including experience with email, word-processing, and spreadsheet programs. Let us know if you have any of the following useful skills or training: US Coast Guard Captains license, small boat piloting experience, drone pilot license, drone piloting experience, GIS. 

Physical Demands: The position will occasionally require strenuous physical activity and irregular hours. Much of the work is done outdoors in hot, muddy, and buggy conditions. Work Hours: Generally, 8:30 – 5:00 M – F; although field work may require early or late hours and occasional weekends.

Background: The Center for Limnology (CFL) is a research center devoted to research and graduate training at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The CFL provides access to the Madison-area lakes and other water bodies through the Hasler Laboratory of Limnology (Hasler Lab) and to the Northern Highland Lakes District through the Trout Lake Station (TLS). Research in the CFL includes nearly every aspect of the physical, chemical, and biological functioning of inland waters, as well as their landscape and social contexts.

This position provides guidance and oversight of field-based programs and operates at the interface between scientists and supporting equipment and facilities. This position provides technical expertise for the building's research programs at a comprehensive and independent level, assists with the instructional tasks as needed, and manages and coordinates CFL research field activities and facilities. The individual often designs, modifies and/or adapts unique one-of-a-kind systems in support of research or instruction. The position is responsible for managing and maintaining all facilities (laboratory and boat facilities, vehicles, office and common spaces); managing and operating the Hasler Lab workshop; instructing other UW personnel on safe use of CFL boats and equipment; and serving as liaison with Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M). This position is located at the Hasler Lab, but collaborates with colleagues at Trout Lake Station.

The University of Notre Dame invites applications for an Endowed Director of theUniversity of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center (UNDERC). We seek an outstanding scientist with credentials suitable for a tenured academic appointment in theDepartment of Biological Sciences to lead this internationally recognized and NEON-affiliated field station and its education and research programs.

The Director will (1) oversee research and teaching at the field station, which is supported by an endowment, (2) promote and facilitate scientific use of UNDERC by faculty at Notre Dame and other institutions, including NEON, and (3) sustain and advance a long-established research training program for undergraduate students.

As a faculty member, he/she is expected to also lead a vibrant internationally-recognized, collaborative, well-funded research program in ecology, evolution, or environmental science that builds upon the platform provided by UNDERC resources and the University of Notre Dame Land o’ Lakes Facility. Excellent collaborative opportunities exist within the region, including with the USFS Ottawa National Forest, other field stations, and NGOs. UNDERC also houses a NSF-supported NEON core monitoring site for the Great Lakes Domain thereby providing rich avenues for engagement of the broader scientific community.

The Land o’ Lakes property, including UNDERC, consists of 7500 acres of forested land in northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan including 30 lakes, wetlands, and streams with a combined surface area of 1350 acres. UNDERC maintains a Director’s residence, winterized laboratory and classroom building, a “wet” laboratory, housing for up to 60 students and researchers, and year-round property management.

The Director is expected to be actively engaged at UNDERC during summer months and at Notre Dame during the academic year, have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and supervise year-round staff associated with UNDERC. It is essential that the Director have the skill set and desire to mentor and motivate research and other staff at an off-campus location, while also being able to effectively liaise with the Land o’ Lakes Facility Manager, Advisory Board, and the other users of the facility.
