50 year Anniversary of Gobabeb Station
Thursday, April 26, 2012 06:36 AM

From a humble beginning in 1962, Gobabeb has established itself over 50 years as proud centre of research and education – making valuable contributions to Namibia’s national knowledge base as well as to the international scientific community.

Gobabeb is synonymous with the Namib Desert, a unique environment that encompasses vast panoramas of majestic landscapes in a striking range of diverse, fascinating plant and animal life, distinct in its beauty and aesthetic charm.  Gobabeb lies in the middle of this pristine environment, 160 km inland from the nearest coastal harbor town of Walvis Bay, in a 100 year long conservation area – the Namib Naukluft Nature Park.   It is an outstanding example of the well researched geological, geomorphologic, ecological and biological desert landscape processes.

For the past fifty years since its inception the centre’s key aim is to facilitate and promote field oriented research taking advantage of the unique characteristics of the Namib Desert.  The centre is also taking part in a leading role for the sustainable practices through natural resource management in arid environments throughout Namibia, the SADC region and internationally.   For the future the intention is to strengthen the centre by continuing to expand knowledge and understanding of the local, national and global environment, and to enhance its capacity to contribute towards a sustainable desert environment.

Field Station and Marine Lab Emerging Intiative Survey
Friday, March 16, 2012 12:16 PM

Dear OBFS and NAML Members,

On March 14 you should have received a link to a survey produced by the Field Stations and Marine Laboratories Emerging Initiative Project.  http://fsmlfuture.weebly.com/index.html

A key goal of this NSF funded project (DBI-1126161) is to gather information that will help facilitate strategic planning for place-based research stations.  This survey will help us collect a representative picture of the variation in site types, which is dependent on a high response rate.  Please help us develop a good description of the place-based research stations and what their needs are by responding to this survey

We have worked hard to keep the survey response time to 20 minutes as we know your time is valuable.  We will not be collecting detailed site information, but rather developing a general understanding of what the landscape looks like for institutions.

If for some reason you did not receive an email with a link to the survey, or know of someone who should receive this survey, please use this link to add a site:  http://fsmlfuture.weebly.com/add-a-survey-site.html.  You can also email us information.

If you have questions feel free to contact me.

Web Updates: Special Characters
Monday, March 12, 2012 06:14 AM

I wanted to update everyone on some behind-the-scenes technical stuff we're working on to make the OBFS site better!

Right now, our site has an issue with what are known online as "special characters"--basically, words with accents or diacritical marks: Ñ, Ç, and Ý, for example.  When those go into the database, they come back out again as...well, not words.  And you may see your station name, or your name, suddenly transformed into something strange.

We are aware of this problem, and have received word from the server folks that they think they will be able to allow "special characters" by the end of 2012.  There is extensive testing involved, since sometimes databases think those characters are command codes.

So, while I can't offer you that feature today, I wanted you to know that we know it's a problem, and are working on a solution that appropriately supports the international membership and diversity of OBFS.
