Toolik Field Station (TFS) is seeking enthusiastic and experienced individuals for two positions:

Environmental Data Center Manager

We are seeking a manager for the TFS Environmental Data Center (EDC). The goal of the EDC is to collect and manage data on key environmental drivers and biological responders to climate change in the local Toolik environs. This baseline data is provided to the science community of Toolik for their use as background and context for framing specific questions and hypotheses about plant and animal adaptation to the Arctic, the structure and function of arctic ecosystems, and responses and feedback of the arctic environment to climate change. (1) Manage the collection of data on plant phenology and arrival, departure, status and abundance of birds in the Toolik region,
(2) summarize these data, develop protocols, provide quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), and provide metadata,
(3) integrate availability of all EDC data (including climate data collected and QA/QC’d by our meteorological group) with GIS and web-based server team and make them available to the public via the EDC website,
(4) assist in the further development of the Biodiversity/phenology program with guidance from TFS management and the external EDC science advisory committee,
(6) manage core and general-use field and laboratory equipment for TFS scientists and
(5) supervise summer seasonal staff.

This position requires residence at TFS half to three-quarters time from mid-May through September of each year; otherwise the job location is at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). The desired candidate will possess: (1) Familiarity with biological monitoring protocols developed in other arctic settings, and knowledge of arctic birds and vegetation, (2) strong written and oral communication and quantitative skills, (3) self-motivation, independence and the ability to work with minimal supervision, as well as ability and willingness to work with site investigators, (4) excellent organizational and documentation skills, and (5) prior supervisory experience. Desired qualifications include M.S. in the Biological Sciences with a background in plant ecology, population biology of plants or animals, and/or significant experience. Logistics Coordinator
The TFS Logistics Office coordinates logistics and procurement for the field station located on the North Slope of Alaska. Duties include:

(1) Management of TFS vehicle fleet
(2) procurement of field station and project supplies
(3) shipping and receiving
(4) Procard reconciliation and accounting
(5) lead of TFS logistics staff
(6) travel management
(7) reporting.

The desired candidate will possess: (1) Broad technical knowledge of building systems, scientific equipment, vehicle maintenance and repair, and food service operations (2) knowledge of vehicle operation, maintenance, and repair (3) knowledge of computer operation, e-mail, web FTP, spreadsheets, data entry and online tracking systems (4) skills in freight shipment preparation (5) skills in records management (6) strong organizational and planning abilities (7) prior experience leading at least two employees (8) the ability to be certified in forklift operation (9) the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to organize and present metrics, reports, and opinions (10) the ability to travel to the North Slope of Alaska and live and work with a variety of people in a close environment. This position in based on the UAF campus, but will be required to travel periodically to TFS for periods of up to two weeks. This position serves as a Program Manager for the Institute of Island Forestry (IPIF) at the Pacific Southwest Research Station (PSW). The incumbent participates as a member of the Station Leadership Team in the development of science resources policies and programs.

This involves major issues such as manpower, budget, priorities of work, and internal and external problems and concerns. The position exercises the full range of managerial responsibilities over the science program and is responsible for program development, planning, budgeting and management information for identifying workforce and organizational needs, target levels, full time equivalents (FTE), program, and Station priorities. Meets with representatives of research institutions and agencies, Regional and State and Private Forestry Staff, concerned citizens, and industrial and public interest groups to gain input into the Station’s current and future research direction. Supervises lead scientists (team leaders) and a Program Assistant, including developing performance standards, evaluating work performance, assigning and planning work to be accomplished, and effecting disciplinary measures.
