Course Name:
Location (Field
Station):
Flathead Lake Biological Station, University
of Montana, east shore of Flathead Lake, Montana, USA
Start Date:

Course Description:
Prerequisites: On
e year of college-level biology, chemistry, and mathematics or consent of i
nstructor. The course provides a conceptual foundation and hands-on field a
nd laboratory training in modern methods in aquatic microbial ecology. Lect
ures, laboratories, field trips, and in-class discussions will be used to e
xplore topics such as physiology and metabolism of aquatic microbes; method
s and tools for assessing microbial diversity, biomass, and growth; and the
role of microbes in bioelemental cycles. Students will gain hands-on exper
ience with both cultivation-based approaches and cultivation-independent me
thods for studying environmental micro-organisms. The heavy field-based emp
hasis is intended to provide an experiential learning environment. Instruct
