Baker University Wetlands in Lawrence, KS is seeking a Biologist and Natural Areas Manager. The Biologist and Natural Areas Manager is responsible for developing and implementing a plan for managing wildlife habitats at the Baker University Wetlands. The plan should be based in scientific principles and include the process of managing the Wetlands in such a way that promotes wetland, prairie, and riparian habitats in the appropriate locations as well as maintains or enhances biodiversity while at the same time reducing or eradicating invasive species. In addition, he/she will be responsible for maintaining a functional wetland on a substantial portion of the property as an on-going contractual obligation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. To this end, he/she will ensure water control structures are functional as well as record quarterly water levels on areas that have active water appropriation permits. The Natural Areas Manager will assist in the on-going research efforts at the Wetlands. This includes assisting the Director in solicitation of visiting scientists as well as in grant writing to support research efforts including the purchase of specialized equipment as needed. He/she will also supervise interns as well as perform administrative duties that support management of and research at the Wetlands. The Natural History Biologist reports to the Director of the Baker Wetlands.

 Applicants should have a Master’s degree in biology or related field as well as a strong background (i.e., knowledge and experience) in habitat management, especially wetland, prairie, and riparian habitats. They should be capable of operation and maintenance of various pieces of equipment/power tools, possess skills to interact with a wide variety of audiences, be detail-oriented with good record keeping skills (particularly in reference to permits), and have the ability to set goals for the wetland facility and manage the budget needed for operation. Applicants should have a working knowledge of common wetland plants and vertebrates of E Kansas.
