Shoals Marine Laboratory is a seasonal field station operated by the University of New Hampshire and Cornell Univeristy. Headquartered in Durham, New Hampshire, SML’s main facility is located on beautiful 100-ac Appledore Island, Maine off the coast Portsmouth, NH. In operations for over 50 years, SML is the largest marine laboratory in the country focused on undergraduate education. The SML mission is to provide outstanding experiential, place-based education and to support innovative research programs focused on understanding and sustaining the marine environment.
